SNORKELLING WITH THE DOHA SUB-AQUA CLUB AND
THE BRITISH SUB-AQUA CLUB
Dear parents,
Welcome to the DSAC
snorkeling course. With the warm climate offered by Qatar,
and the possibility of annual holidays in exotic and warmer climates than the UK offers, our
children are tempted by the various films and documentaries about the
underwater world and want to explore it for themselves. Such a window on this
fascinating environment, which covers more than two thirds of the world's
surface, can be provided by a simple facemask.
Our eyes were not
designed to focus underwater and require an airspace in order to see clearly. Correct
use of this simple piece of equipment forms the basis of one of the fastest
growing sports worldwide : Snorkeling.
The addition of a simple
tube to allow easy breathing without lifting the head, and a pair of fins to
aid propulsion, complete the basic kit. However, as with most sports, in order
to gain the most from it, some basic instruction in the use of this equipment
is advised.
After about 6 hours of
tuition with the DSAC, your aspiring snorkel diver will be ready to explore the
watery world. The training will lead to the recognized qualifications of BSAC.
Basic Snorkel Diver, then
BSAC Snorkel Diver for which badges, certificates and logbooks will be issued. The
BSAC is the UK Governing Body for underwater swimming, which includes both
snorkeling and SCUBA diving.
Those interested in
developing their skills can become members of the organization through the BSAC
Branch system and can continue their training to higher grades.
Your child’s snorkel
lessons each night will consist of about 10 –15 minutes theory, then about one
hour of formal training, with the remainder of the lesson given over to snorkel
games.
At the end of formal
pool training, it is our intention to take the newly qualified snorkellers on a
boat trip to Safiliyah
Island where they can
practice their new skills. The trip will be shortly after school finishes on a
Saturday, and more details will be given closer to the time. All water sports contain an element of risk, including snorkelling and the use of a power boat. To know more about these risks, download the RISK STATEMENT .
Below, a link to download "Snorkeling for all" (the theory notes from BSAC), and some advices from our Chief Instructor, BSAC First Class Diver Peter Bolton, on how to buy snorkeling gear. We at the DSAC hope
your children enjoy the course. DSAC
